Why Sending Out Hundreds of Online Job Applications Doesn’t Work

In investing, there’s a common saying that goes something like:

“In order to win, you need to know what game you’re playing.”

If you’re a long term investor, you can’t let day traders and weekly news hurt your focus on the 10-50 year goal.

They’re not playing the same game you are and have totally different rules of engagement (and for winning vs. losing).

The same goes for applying for jobs online.

You’re playing a game with tons of people (sometimes maybe not even people) all flooding into job postings by the thousand.

There’s a reason why there are hundreds of resume writers and AI tools out there.

Everyone is playing the same game which makes it a razor thin margin to stand out.

Which is why you’re going to need to start playing a different game.

Instead of sending out hundreds of resumes, you’re going to need to dial in on just a few companies and really hone in on how you reach out to them.

There a MUCH fewer people playing this game and this is where you’ll win.

Here’s how the numbers looked for my job search as an example:

  • I targeted 25 companies total

  • I got interviews with 7 out of 25 companies

  • 4 interviews came from referrals

  • 3 interviews came from cold outreach

  • I ended up with 3 offers and had to stop the interview process with 2 other companies

I shit you not.

I interviewed with 28% of the companies I reached out to when the average person sending out applications probably had a less than a 2% success rate.

The game I played didn’t even involve sending in a resume (recruiters have LinkedIn and I highly suggest your profile looks good because that’s where they’ll go first).

The cherry on top is that I also got the exact right job for me because I did the research and wasn’t afraid to just settle for whatever I got.

All of this was accomplished by approaching my job search with timeless sales strategies and systems that I use at work every day.

So, I ask you this question.

Which game are you going to play in your job search?
